Do you Have to go on a Diet to Lose Weight?

When you want to lose weight you might think that you have to go on a diet to lose it, even though this is not the case. It is hardly surprising if you believe this, though, when there are so many diet plans to choose from. The whole process of losing weight can seem so complicated that it becomes easier just to remain as you are than to try shedding those extra pounds you’re carrying. However, losing weight doesn’t have to be difficult and you don’t necessarily have to go on a diet to achieve weight loss success.

Calories in versus calories out
To lose weight you basically have to reduce your calorie intake enough to ensure that the number of calories your body utilises exceeds the number of calories consumed. There are plenty of ways to achieve this without going on a diet. Your main focus obviously has to be on eating healthier, lower calorie foods and cutting down your portion sizes. It is also worth combining a reduced calorie diet with a more active lifestyle, as exercise helps you to burn more calories and tone up.

Fad diets are a quick fix only
Despite the fact fad diets can be hard to stick to, you achieve results rapidly, which makes all the deprivation seem worthwhile and ensures they remain popular. However, when you decide to go on a diet, you always have in the back of your mind the thought that after a couple of weeks or months you can return to your normal eating habits. These are the very habits that caused your weight gain in the first place, though. Consequently, once your diet is over and you decide to make up for lost time the chances are you will put on all the weight you lost, if not more.

Time for a lifestyle change

If you want to get out of the never-ending cycle of losing weight and gaining it all back again, you have to get used to eating habits that will ensure you maintain a healthy weight. There may still be occasions when you go overboard, eating and drinking too much, but there will be a better balance in your life. To manage your weight you have to be aware of how much energy your body needs, so that you can adjust your diet accordingly. During the winter months you may find yourself doing less exercise, in which case you will obviously have to reduce your calorie intake, which may you may well have to change again once summer arrives.

No, you don’t have to go on a diet to lose weight
By deciding to go on a diet, you’re setting yourself up for failure, because you become so focused on losing weight within a short space of time that you don’t think about what happens after you have reached your weight-loss goal. It is therefore a good idea to get used to eating healthier and doing more exercise so that you can lose weight at a sensible rate and keep it off.
