Why You Should Never Trust a Politician

You should never trust politician, because politicians will lie and cheat their way into power and then do everything they can to retain that power. Politicians will try to convince you that they are worthy of your vote; that they will represent your interests in parliament and defend your rights, but the reality is most of them only care about power, influence and money. Consequently, even those who had principles when they got into politics soon lose them, as they spend increasing amounts of time associating with wealthy businessmen and other influential figures. It doesn't take them long to forget about the ordinary individuals who got them elected.

It doesn't even matter which party politicians belong to, as they're all the same. Left-wing and right-wing political groups are usually full of the same type of highly-educated and privileged individuals who have ruthlessly pursued a career in politics, trampling on whoever it was necessary to in order to reach the top. Once upon a time, it at least seemed as though there some were politicians who had the country's best interests at heart and who campaigned for issues they cared about. Even then, though, politicians would generally get caught out in one way or another, either because of some kind of misdoing in their personal life or, even worse, serious wrongdoing in their professional life.

Nowadays, politicians are still found wanting, but now they don't even have any kind of principles to redeem themselves. It is only too obvious that most of today's politicians enter the world of politics purely to feather their own nests, milking the expenses system and getting in with representatives of industry who will later give them a job when they quit politics. Even before leaving politics, you will see politicians on the board of various companies, often in conflict with their actual duties as a politician. A health minister may be on the payroll of a private health company, for instance, yet he is supposed to take decisions on health matters that affect the nation.

Even when the media highlights conflicts of interest and underhand dealings, you generally feel powerless to do anything. You can use your vote to get a party out office and put another one in its place, but this won't solve anything when you're left with another useless bunch of lying, manipulative politicians. You could take to the streets and make your voice heard in this way, but who exactly will be listening? The chances are you will be demonised by the media, whose representatives are conflicted by the desire to expose corrupt politicians whilst also maintaining social order, and beaten into submission by other state mechanisms.

When you know that nothing ever really changes, it becomes harder to motivate yourself to do anything to try to change the situation. Of course, you could always try to get into politics yourself, but this is extremely difficult to achieve if you do not know the right people or have the resources to fund a political campaign. Plus, even if you do succeed, there is a danger you will be corrupted by power yourself and end up just like the rest of them. It is a pretty depressing state of affairs, but at least if you don't invest any trust in your politicians from the outset you can't be disappointed later on when they do something unethical.
