Why do People Spend so much Time on Their Computers?

The prevalence of technology in everyday life has only been made possible as computers, mobile phones, mp3 players and other technological innovations have become cheaper. Nowadays, computers are accessible to a much wider group of people, so that the idea of not having a computer is unthinkable to some. Indeed, many people work with computers and earn a living from the computer industry. It may seem as though people spend too much time on their computers, but not everyone has a choice when they are paid to work with them all day long!

Of course, there are some people who do not need a computer to do their job, but still find themselves spending a significant period of time playing games or socialising online. Although the majority of people are able to find the right balance between living a normal life and their computer usage, there are some people who become hooked to playing computer games and browsing online. Clearly, this is not a healthy situation, since individuals with a gaming or Internet addiction may find that they can't hold down a job or develop relationships, so that they become depressed and stop taking care of themselves.

It is almost understandable how people become obsessed with their computers, though, as they are a portal to a whole different world. Individuals are able to play games, learn about subjects they've never thought of before, connect with people who have similar interests and spend money without leaving their homes. It is possible to make new friends and stay in touch with old companions and relatives. For those who are shy and have difficulty relating to other people, computers offer them an escape – they can adopt a completely different persona and show a different side of themselves.

Unfortunately, the amount of time many people choose to spend on their computers means that some are missing out on vital social interaction. Instead of going out and meeting people, trying new activities and living life, there are those who are content to live in the fantasy world they have created for themselves online, even though this may not be as satisfying. However, they do not always realise this, as they get a buzz from chatting online or finding a bargain with the help of their trusty computer.

Since most people have to deal with computers on a daily basis, it is considered to be appropriate and normal behaviour to spend long periods of time online or playing games. In modern society, it is hard to imagine living without computers when they have come to be seen as such an integral part of everyday life. This may not necessarily be a positive thing, though, when it is affecting some people's ability to form relationships in real life.
