Why do Celebrities Look so Perfect on Magazine Covers?

It is very unusual to see a celebrity on the front of a magazine looking anything less than perfect. Even the most attractive celebrities clearly have a lot of help to look as flawless as they do, with make-up, lighting, a decent photographer and digital enhancement all contributing to the images of perfection used by various magazines. Some celebrities are airbrushed to within an inch of their life, so that when you see them in a different context you can hardly believe it is them, having been led to believe they are wrinkle-free and extremely slim when they clearly are not!

Magazine editors are under the impression that those who buy magazines aren't interested in seeing images of 'real' people and that they want to believe that celebrities are superhuman – younger, slimmer and more attractive than they are. As far as magazine editors are concerned, this is what drives people to buy magazines. They don't want to see fat, ugly-looking celebrities – not that there are many of them around anyway – on the front of a magazine and are, instead, drawn to those with seemingly perfect celebrities gracing the magazine cover. Maybe they have a point, since everyone is so used to seeing images of perfection that anything different may come as quite a shock.

Most people nowadays are aware of photoshopping and know that what they see isn't necessarily the reality. The trouble is even if there is a celebrity out there who is so perfect that she doesn't need to be airbrushed you automatically assume that she has had a little help. Mind you, the chances are that if she has reached a certain age and still has a perfect complexion, she may have had a little help from the surgeon's knife, anyway. Everyone is so cynical about the way celebrities look, believing that they've all had work done or that images of them have been digitally altered, but they continue to buy celebrity magazines regardless.

Of course, when there are so many beautiful celebrities you can find yourself wanting to look like them, even though you know that what you see isn't necessarily a representation of the truth. The images you see of celebrities are all you have to go on, though, since a magazine picture is probably the closest you're ever going to get to a celebrity. These celebrities may not look as good in real life as they do on the cover of a magazine, but it is difficult to make it as a celebrity without having some kind of appeal. Celebrities may not be perfect, but they usually have something about them that almost makes it irrelevant whether they look perfect or not.
