Exercise is important for a long and healthy life, but despite the many benefits associated with an active lifestyle, there are plenty of people who do not even bother to walk anywhere. Walking is surely one of the easiest types of activity you can do and yet there are some people who are so lazy that they would prefer to walk everywhere. It is obviously your choice whether to exercise or not, but by doing at least half an hour of exercise every day, you will notice that you feel fitter and healthier and that it becomes easier to watch your weight.
It is therefore important to focus on what you can get out of a more active lifestyle, as this will keep you focused on increasing your activity levels. It helps to have a specific goal, such as wanting to lose weight or run a marathon for charity, as this will keep you motivated. Once you have set yourself a goal, you can then devise a plan that will enable you to achieve that goal, rather than skipping exercise some days, overdoing it on other days and injuring yourself and becoming disheartened. It should be possible for you to achieve anything you set your mind to.
You don't necessarily have to be training for a marathon or triathlon to lead a more active lifestyle, as you may simply want to walk or cycle more, as these are activities which you can fit into your normal life. Indeed, to increase your activity levels, you have to set aside time in your day to exercise, as otherwise you could just end up putting it off until later and never actually get around to doing anything. If you can find an activity which you have to do anyway, such as walking, it will be much easier for you to make it a regular habit than, for instance, travelling miles out of your way to attend a gym.
That is not to say you can't make going to the gym into a habit, especially if you enjoy being around other people, and in particular people who have similar goals to you and who may be able to offer you some advice. There are other many other options when it comes to increasing your activity levels, as you may decide to take up a sport, so that you can put your competitive nature to good use whilst meeting new people at the same time. You may find it easier to motivate yourself if you have to work as part of a team and if there are other people encouraging you to keep going.
Ultimately, though, how active you are will depend on the time and effort you are prepared to put into getting some exercise. It is true that life can sometimes get in the way of a workout, but it is worth considering the benefits of exercise to your health and trying to find the motivation needed to exercise regularly. It can be a challenge to increase your activity levels at first, especially when you are not used to doing any kind of exercise, but it is definitely worth doing, so that you can stay trim and reduce the potential for health problems as you get older.
