Why Determination is Needed to Maintain a Healthy Weight

You might think that you only require determination when losing weight, as you have to go to the extra effort of counting calories and doing exercise. However, this is perhaps why so many people have difficulty maintaining a healthy weight. You can't simply go on a diet, lose lots of weight and expect to be able to keep the weight off without continuing to practise good habits. If you simply go back to eating large quantities of junk food once you have reached your weight-loss goal and stop doing exercise, the inevitable result will be weight gain. You then find yourself having to start the whole weight-loss process again.

Thus, you need to have the determination to continue monitoring your eating habits and getting some exercise if you don't want to end up watching your weight continually going up and down, depending on whether you're on a diet or not. Without the determination to maintain a healthy weight, it becomes far too easy to go back to the habits that are most familiar to you. Even if you've managed to stick to a healthy eating plan for many months, sometimes you still have the urge to kick back and relax. You don't want to have to permanently worry about what you're eating or whether you're doing enough exercise, because it can be stressful.

However, if you make no effort whatsoever to control the amount of food you eat and rarely bother to exercise, you will put on weight and you will end up right back at square one, needing to change your eating habits in order to lose weight. This will mean having to reduce your calorie intake once again whilst increasing your calorie expenditure. You also have to deal with the embarrassment and shame of gaining all the weight you lost back and you need to find the motivation to lose weight again, despite worrying about the possibility of regaining it all again, and it isn't easy. Surely, it is better to maintain a healthy weight than to watch your weight regularly fluctuate.

If you don't have any determination to maintain a healthy weight, it is pretty pointless losing weight in the first place, as you will ultimately end up going back to the habits that offer you comfort. Clearly, it is much easier to sit around, stuffing your face with food and not bothering to consider your calorie intake, but you will pay for it when you step on the scales. Being overweight isn't exactly good for your health; nor is yo-yo dieting, and so you need to focus on the benefits of maintaining a healthy weight, so that you can take the appropriate steps to avoid weight gain. It may require some effort, but it is worth it for the sake of your overall health and well-being.

Why Determination is Needed to Lose Weight

Determination is needed to lose weight, because losing weight isn't easy. To get the results you want, you have to be prepared to work at it. This means counting calories for weeks; months; maybe even years. It means you have to make changes to your diet and start getting more exercise, which can be a challenge when it's not something you're used to. If you have a lot of bad habits, such as serving huge portions at meal times, snacking on junk food throughout the day, and not bothering to exercise, you obviously have to be prepared to change in order to reach your weight-loss goal.

Without determination, it becomes so much easier to give up on your weight-loss plans and go back to what is familiar to you. If you're not determined to succeed when it comes to losing weight, you may find that all those bad habits you've tried to get rid of make their way back into your life. Clearly, if you have quite a bit of weight to lose, it's going to take more than just a couple of weeks to get down to your ideal weight, and so you need to stay focused on eating right and exercising regularly. If you're determined enough, you will continue to do what is necessary to lose weight, even if it is somewhat of a hassle.

When you have determination to succeed, you don't start making excuses about why you should give up, which is incredibly easy to do when you're struggling with healthy eating and wavering about whether to continue on your weight-loss journey or not. Thus, you are more likely to actually keep making the effort to watch your portion sizes, make healthier food choices, snack less and exercise more. It might take you a long time to reach your goal, but your determination keeps you focused on what you need to do to succeed and you don't allow anything else to get in your way.

It is particularly useful to have determination when you don't seem to have any support from friends and family. Sometimes, those closest to you are not as helpful as you would like them to be and can actually undermine your efforts and make you more inclined to give up. With enough determination, though, you can achieve whatever you put your mind to, including weight loss. It is difficult to imagine that you will be able to lose enough weight to reach your goal without an appropriate amount of determination, since this attribute is so critical to possess when you have to completely overhaul your attitude towards food and exercise.

Finding the Determination to Lose Weight

To lose weight you need to have the determination to succeed. However, when you know just how difficult losing weight can be, finding this determination can prove to be a challenge. Although losing weight may simply be a matter of reducing your calorie intake and increasing your calorie expenditure, in practice you have to change your way of thinking about food and exercise. Consequently, it is much easier to tell yourself that your weight isn’t really that much of a problem so that you can avoid dealing with it for as long as possible.

Focus on the benefits
If you’re overweight and extremely unhappy with the way you look and feel then, clearly, you have to do something about it. Losing weight might be difficult, but at least you will be able to appreciate the benefits once the pounds start to fall off. By losing weight you will be improving your health prospects, reducing your chances of developing high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and osteoarthritis.

Losing weight can also improve your self-esteem and boost your confidence, especially as you will be able to wear whatever clothes you want and to feel better about your appearance. Plus, you will be able to take part in activities that your weight perhaps made harder to do in the past.

Embrace the idea of lifestyle change
Finding the determination to lose weight can be particularly difficult when you think that you have to reduce your calorie intake to a ridiculously low figure in order to lose weight. Rather than becoming preoccupied with losing weight as fast as you can by using fad diets to assist you, it is worth embracing the idea of lifestyle change instead.

Ultimately, the only way you’re going to lose weight and keep it off is by getting used to eating smaller portions and opting for healthier foods, as well as increasing your activity levels. Thus, you may as well start as you mean to go on, because even if your weight loss is not quite as fast as you would like, at least you have a better chance of keeping the weight off.

Learn to reward yourself
Losing enough weight to reach your goal can take time and so you need to be patient and have faith that you will get there in the end. It definitely helps if you have something to look forward to, so that rather than using food to reward yourself for all your hard work you have an equally enjoyable, but less fattening, reward! You may decide to go on a shopping spree and buy a whole new wardrobe or to go on holiday and wear a bikini for the first time.

However you decide to reward yourself, knowing that you have something to look forward to should keep your mind focused on eating healthily and doing exercise.

Conclusion
There are plenty of good reasons to consider losing weight, but you really have to want to lose weight for your own sake, rather than trying to please other people. You are the one that has to put in a lot of hard work and to re-train yourself to eat and exercise differently. It may not be easy to find the determination needed to tackle your weight, but once you have found it, it is worth making the most of it so that you can get used to leading the healthier lifestyle that is required to help you maintain a lower weight.
