The Dangers of Building Online Relationships

The Internet is a wonderful invention that has connected people from all over the world. You frequently read of couples who have got together after connecting online and it gives you hope that maybe somewhere out there you will find the partner of your dreams. The trouble is that online relationships are very different from real-life ones. The Internet is a fantastic way to get to know someone, but, at the same time, you have to be conscious of the fact that the person you’re talking to could be misleading you in some way.

Unfortunately, it is so much easier to create an online persona that differs from the person you are in real life. Of course, if you have any intention of meeting the person you’re chatting to online, then there is very little point posting a picture of someone who looks like a supermodel when you’re actually short and fat! This doesn’t seem to stop some people, but it is pointless, because you want to know that the person you’re talking to is who they say they are. Thus, if you do meet someone you’ve been chatting to online and find out they look very different from their picture, you may start to wonder what other lies they have been telling.

Online relationships can give you some degree of fulfilment, but most people only enter into them on the basis that one day they will meet up with the person they’re chatting to. However, just because you want to get to know someone and eventually meet up with them, that doesn’t mean they have the same objectives. They may simply want to engage in sex talk with you or get you to like them, so that they can extract details about your personal life from you and try to get money out of you. When you feel there is a real connection between you and the person you’re talking to online, it’s easy to get carried away and believe that you’re ‘in love’, but is it really possible to fall in love with someone you’ve never met before?

Ultimately, online dating and friendship sites have facilitated the creation of relationships across the land and enabled people who may never otherwise have met to discover each other. However, at the end of the day, there has to be clarity about what each person wants and a willingness to take the relationship offline on the part of both people. Honesty is also important, as is trust. Although there needs to be a degree of trust, you also have to be aware of the fact that people do lie and that the person you think you’re getting may not be what you actually get.

This happens in real life, as well, though. Even if you get together with someone you met at work, it doesn’t mean they’re not hiding something either. It’s just that with online relationships you have to be more acutely aware of the dangers, because it is so easy to be open about your feelings and emotions. Consequently, even though to some people online relationships are not ‘proper’ relationships, there is still the chance that you could be left feeling used, abandoned and hurt by someone who you thought cared for you, which is always painful, regardless of how you met.

Dangers of Letting Your Weight Get Out of Control

If you are so heavy that you are classed as morbidly obese and have begun to develop health problems as a result of your size, it is evident that your weight is out of control. You probably never meant to put on so much weight, but found yourself on a downward spiral of eating and gaining weight. The heavier you became, the more you turned to food for comfort and when this happens it becomes harder to imagine the situation ever changing. You're carrying so much extra weight that it may take years to reach your goal weight, a prospect which makes finding the motivation to lose weight even harder.

Unfortunately, if you fail to tackle your weight you could run into serious problems. As you get heavier it becomes harder to do the normal everyday things that people who are a healthy weight take for granted. When you're substantially overweight, it can be extremely difficult to go for a walk, for instance. Walking is one of the easiest activities there is, but this is not the case when you're carrying too much weight. You may find that you are left out of breath after taking only a few steps and that there is so much pressure on your joints that you are in pain and have to sit down after covering only a few metres.

When you can't even do a basic form of exercise, such as walking, the chances are your weight problem is only going to get worse, since you end up burning even fewer calories. Clearly, if you burn fewer calories but continue to eat a high-calorie diet, the result will be continuing weight gain. It is not only exercise which can become difficult when your weight is out of control, as it can also affect your confidence, particularly in social situation. As an overweight individual, you can find yourself a target for abuse, as individuals shout nasty remarks at you regarding your weight. This can make you less inclined to leave the house.

Not only do you have to contend with bullying when you are overweight, though, as you may discover it is harder to carry out ordinary, everyday activities such as going to the cinema or shopping for clothes. When you're extremely heavy, you may not be able to fit into seats that are designed to accommodate a slimmer person and you may find yourself in an embarrassing situation that makes you want to leave. Going shopping for clothes can be equally traumatic, especially if you are with friends who are much slimmer than you are, and you can only find clothes that fit you in specialist plus-size stores.

The most dangerous aspect of letting your weight get out of control is the implications for your health. If you allow yourself to gain too much weight, you could find yourself diagnosed with a range of health conditions such as sleep apnoea, diabetes and arthritis. Your heart is under a great deal of pressure when you're overweight and your organs are likely to be covered in fat, so that you are at a higher risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke than someone of a healthy weight. Being overweight – especially when you are so overweight that you are considered to be morbidly obese – certainly does your health no favours and you could be shortening your life.

Thus, if you're a few pounds overweight it is worth trying to do something to lose the extra weight before it becomes a significant problem, and if you're extremely overweight you need to find the motivation to start trying to lose weight. You have to tell yourself that it's not too late, because it isn't. Although there is a long road ahead of you, it is possible for you to lose weight so that your health improves and you can enjoy life once again without having to worry about your size.

Dangers of Cycling on the UK's Roads

Cycling is an activity that has grown in popularity over recent years in the UK for a number of reasons. After witnessing the success of British professional cyclists some people have been inspired to take up the sport, wanting to improve their fitness and to compete against others. Transport policy and a concern for environmental sustainability have also encouraged more people to leave their cars at home and get on their bikes instead, as has the increasing cost of running a car. Yet, cycling on UK roads can be a dangerous experience, with far too many cyclists coming off badly in accidents that could potentially have been avoided.

The trouble is that some car drivers cannot get their heads around the fact that they do not own the roads. There are those who claim they pay road tax, despite the fact such a tax no longer exists, and that for some reason this gives them the right to do what they want. They may well pay Vehicle Excise Duty, but the cost of maintaining the roads actually comes out of general taxation, a tax which the majority of cyclists also pay. Plus, bikes cause far less damage to the roads than larger vehicles, such as cars. There will always be car drivers who cannot be reasoned with, though.

These are the kind of drivers who are prepared to overtake dangerously close to a cyclist, pull out in front of a cyclist when they should give way and beep their horn in anguish at being held up for a few seconds behind a relatively slow-moving bike. They are so impatient that they don't seem to care about their safety or the safety of other road users, as their overriding priority is to reach their destination as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, it only takes one inconsiderate move by a car driver for a cyclist's life to come to a premature end.

This is not only the case in the UK, as anywhere that cyclists and cars have to mix, cyclists are always going to be more exposed and vulnerable to danger. However, in other countries there does seem to be a greater tolerance towards cyclists. In the UK, there have been instances where, as a result of careless driving, a cyclist has been killed, yet instead of being punished by the courts, the driver is let off with barely even a slap on the wrists. This is hardly likely to send out the right message to other road users who rightly believe they can get away with murder.

It is not always the car driver's fault, as there are cyclists who flout the law and take their life into their own hands, but most do not want to inconvenience other road users, especially when they know how car drivers can respond. Cyclists have so few options, though, since cycle lane provision is inadequate and the state of the roads is often atrocious, so that cars and bikes alike have to dodge pot holes and other bumps in the road. What there needs to be, therefore, is a greater amount of respect between the two parties, rather than the current antagonism which seems to exist.

Dangers of Ignoring a Weight Problem

Ignoring a weight problem won't make it go away, unfortunately, and the chances are it is only going to get worse. You may try to bury your head in the sand and tell yourself that you're happy being big and curvy, but you can't ignore the fact that your weight is making it difficult for you to do the things you used to enjoy doing. As you get heavier, you may discover that you can no longer walk for very long and that even going to a theme park is fraught with difficulty. Even more significant is the health implications of being overweight.

Although you may appear to be in good health, you don't know what is going on underneath the surface and the chances are it isn't so good. Being overweight places greater strain on your heart and major muscles become covered in fat and your arteries clogged up, which puts you at a higher risk of having a heart attack or stroke. You will also be more likely to develop diabetes and conditions such as sleep apnoea and osteoarthritis, which is why you should not take your health for granted when you're considerably overweight.

Of course, nobody wants to think that they could suffer a heart attack or develop a life-threatening health issue, and so even when you know the connection between being overweight and various health problems, you may just avoid thinking about it. You tell yourself that there are plenty of slim fitness fanatics who drop dead whilst on a run, even though statistics indicate that eating a poor diet and not doing any exercise is bad for you and increases the likelihood of a premature death. Denial isn't going to change the fact that you could die as a result of your weight.

It is such a shame that so many people are dying from weight-related health issues when it is entirely possible to take steps that will bring your weight under control. It might not be easy to lose weight, but with the right support and guidance you can lose weight and improve your health prospects. You may believe that you're happy being overweight, but once the pounds start falling off you, you realise how much more confident and healthier you feel. By being proactive and losing weight you can approach the future with a more positive attitude and outlook.

If, on the other hand, you choose to ignore a weight problem, there is a good chance you will only be storing up problems for the future – problems that you will have to deal with and that will mean you can no longer ignore your weight. It is therefore better to confront your weight issues immediately than to ignore them and pretend that they are not even a problem when the reality is that they very much are.

Dangers of Being a Workaholic

You might think that being a workaholic is a good thing and that you're bound to have a successful career because your life is devoted to your work. However, for most people being a workaholic has many negative associations. It generally means that you are obsessed with your work and have no time for outside interests or other people. You are single-minded in wanting to get the most out of your career and are prepared to get to the top any possible way you can. Consequently, you may use rather underhand methods to get what you want, which clearly won't go down well with other people.

You could therefore end up jeopardising your career, since if you are completely fixated on your work, always going above and beyond what is expected of you and cosying up to your superiors, this is hardly likely to be appreciated by your co-workers. It can be difficult to form relationships within the workplace if your main focus is on you and your career. If you adopt a selfish attitude and are prepared to stab people in the back to further your career, this won't look very good to anyone and perhaps you'll get ahead in your career, but nobody will respect you for it.

When you're a workaholic your life revolves around work, so that nobody else gets a look in. It can be difficult to establish new friendships or romantic relationships and to keep friends and lovers when you don't have any time for people. You can't expect people to hang around, waiting for you to give them a call and then meet up whenever you have a spare minute, particularly if you have a habit of letting people down. If you're always late and sometimes don't even bother to turn up because work gets in the way you could find yourself increasingly isolated.

Being a workaholic makes it easier for you to ignore your lack of social life and fractured family life, but you can't ignore the health problems that working all the time can lead to. If you work long hours, you may not eat a very healthy diet, simply grabbing whatever food you can; you probably won't take time out of your schedule to exercise; and there is a good chance you won't get enough sleep. You could find yourself gaining weight and feeling lethargic; you may start to feel depressed and have difficulty controlling your stress levels. It is obviously harder to concentrate when you're feeling down and you're constantly run down, which could make it difficult for you to work. You may think that expending all your energy on your career is rewarding and gives you a great sense of satisfaction, but if you focus on your career at the expense of everything else you may discover otherwise. If you isolate yourself from everyone and don't look after your health, you could find that it becomes increasingly difficult to accomplish your career goals, anyway, and that you have nothing else in your life to fall back on.
